Meet the cast of Fish Boy
I’m Tom and I play the Fish and Chicken in Fish Boy. This project has really made me aware of how bad things have become in our rivers. We worked with many people along the way that opened my eyes to the phosphate levels, sewage and overall appalling water quality we have come to accept. Through our performance it has been fantastic to see the way that young people have responded to the different questions it poses. I think it’s important to make sure children are aware of these issues so as they grow older, they make sure to look after the rivers and wildlife.
Creating Fish Boy revealed the significant harm our daily habits inflict on rivers. The two roles I play—Algae and the Sewage Puppet—highlight both the sources and the consequences of neglecting our rivers. Touring with Fish Boy has made me more mindful about recycling in my own life. One of the most rewarding experiences was co-developing the show’s concepts with 115 local primary school children and transforming their imaginative ideas into a vibrant stage performance.
I’m John and I play Tommy Minton in Fish Boy. Since being a part of this creation, I’ve really been exposed to the hard facts about the poor state of our river, and I’ve taken conscious steps to avoid buying into chicken products, which as a by-product are a big contributing factor into the pollution into the river. What has been nice, is to see the impact our show has been having on the young people who’ve seen it so far.

A collaborative project
“We decided very early on to keep our base in Hereford, and we are proud of what our hometown has done for us as an organisation.” Says Artistic Director, Tamsin Fitzgerald, “We have seen young people attend classes and leave as artists, create work that both reflects and challenges our local audience and invited the world’s best artists to come and create incredible work in Hereford and then perform it across the world”
Now the company’s newest collaborators have been 114 primary school children from across Herefordshire. Working alongside students from Ivington, Longtown, St. Martins, St. Thomas Cantilupe, Wigmore and Brampton Abbotts Primary schools earlier in 2024, the company co-created Fish Boy.
