After joining The Courtyard in August 2023, our Young Film Programmers Emily, Georgia and Stuart have come to their final film season. It’s been a pleasure working with them over the last 2 years. Whether it’s a RADIX Film Club monthly screening, their crazy Halloween double-bills or a season of non-fiction cinema, they’ve always looked to push boundaries and challenge both themselves and The Courtyard’s audiences. Here’s what they’ve been working on in the last few months…
Whether you’re leafing through this month’s film guide, or scrolling through Netflix, how do you choose what you want to watch? With this mini season, we hope to explore the factors that influence our taste in films, drawing back the curtain on how film programmers guide these decisions.
A joyous but gritty story documenting the lives of a group of friends who met at Greenham common peace camp circa 1980. Part animation, part archive and part interviews from the lesbians who continue to be today’s artists, activists and all round icons.
“I chose this film because it captures the pure DIY spirit that dykes do best, and it makes me feel like I can do anything. No matter your identity, I hope it inspires you too!” – Georgia
Screening: Saturday 22 March, 7.45pm & Thursday 27 March, 2.30pm
Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a gunslinger for hire, helps a young widow and defends a group of “outlaws” from ruthless bounty hunters, led by the vicious Tigrero (Klaus Kinski). Sergio Corbucci (Django) crafts a cold and unforgiving landscape in this 1968 Italian western masterpiece, featuring a chilling score by maestro Ennio Morricone. Original language with English subtitles.
“One of the best and most unique spaghetti westerns, going toe to toe with Sergio Leone’s classic Dollars Trilogy, this is an exciting opportunity for me to give one of my favourite films the attention it deserves.” – Stuart
Screening: Monday 24 March, 2.30pm & Wednesday 26 March, 7.45pm
Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975, 15)
Voted the greatest film of all time in a 2022 poll conducted by Sight and Sound, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles is considered a classic of feminist arthouse cinema. The film stars Delphine Seyrig as a widowed housewife whose mundane existence begins to unravel over the course of three days. Original language with English subtitles.
“Jeanne Dielman is a film that challenges what we think cinema can do, and is the perfect starting point for discovering the work of a unique and groundbreaking filmmaker.” – Emily
Screening: Monday 31 March, 7pm
Whilst this season marks the end of the Young Film Programmers project, as a part of their legacy the RADIX Film Club will be continuing with monthly screenings, discussions and Q&A’s around unusual or radical films. Thank you again to our funders on this project; the BFI, Film Hub Midlands and the National Lottery.
